How to play Court Piece
- You partner the player sitting across from you; the other two form the opposing team.
- The player after the dealer receives 5 cards and calls the trump suit (the "single sar" rule). Then everyone gets the rest of their 13.
- The trump caller leads. You must follow the led suit while you have it; out of suit, play anything — trump it if you want to win the trick.
- The highest trump wins the trick, otherwise the highest card of the led suit. The winner leads next.
- The first team to win 7 of the 13 tricks takes the round — that's one court. Most courts after 5 rounds wins.
Court Piece rules at a glance
- Trump is decided fresh every round by the player after the dealer, from their first five cards only.
- Tricks won by you and your partner count together as a team.
- Unlike Callbreak, there is no bidding and no obligation to beat the winning card or to trump when void.
- A round ends the moment a team reaches 7 tricks.
Strategy tips
- Call your longest suit as trump, not necessarily your strongest — length wins the late tricks.
- Lead the suits your partner ruffs (trumps) or controls; watch what they win with.
- Don't waste trumps beating your own partner's winning card — discard low instead.
- Count trumps. When the opponents run out, your small trumps become winners.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Court Piece the same as Hokm or Rang?
- Yes — Court Piece goes by many names: Hokm in Iran and the Gulf, Rang or Rung in Pakistan and India, and sometimes Coat Piece. It's the same 2v2 trump-calling game.
- What is the single sar rule?
- The player after the dealer looks at only their first five cards and commits to a trump suit before the rest are dealt. It's the most common way to determine trump.
- How is Court Piece different from Callbreak?
- Court Piece is a team game with a called trump and no bidding; Callbreak is solo with fixed spade trump and a bid you must make. Court Piece rounds also end early at 7 tricks.
- Can I play Court Piece free against the computer?
- Yes — the game above runs entirely in your browser against AI players, free, with no download or registration.
