How to play Spades
- Four players in two teams — you partner the player across the table. Each of you is dealt 13 cards.
- Bid how many tricks you'll win. Your bid and your partner's add up to your team's contract. Bid Nil (0) to promise you'll win none.
- Follow the led suit if you can. Out of it, play anything — including a spade to trump. You can't lead a spade until spades are "broken".
- The highest spade wins the trick; with no spade played, the highest card of the led suit wins.
- After 13 tricks the round is scored. Five rounds decide the game.
Spades scoring at a glance
- Make your team's combined bid: +10 per trick bid. Miss it and lose 10 per trick bid.
- Each trick over your bid is a bag (+1) — but every 10 bags your team piles up costs −100. Don't over-win.
- Nil: take zero tricks for +100; take even one and it's −100.
- Highest team total after 5 rounds wins the game.
Strategy tips
- Bid your near-certain winners — aces, the king and queen of spades, and long spades. Two partners over-bidding is how teams get set.
- Consider Nil when your hand is full of low cards in the side suits and short on spades.
- Hold a low spade to duck under a partner's Nil, or to avoid taking an unwanted bag.
- Count bags: near a multiple of 10, throw tricks rather than collect the penalty.
